SUMMARY:NeC-ROTAC Webinar - Advocacy\, Organizing\, and Communication Strategies to Advance Rural Addiction Policy
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will provide practical knowledge of how to communicate a rural health evidence-base to policymakers and engage in advocacy to promote policy goals. Rural health stakeholders are uniquely positioned to advocate on behalf of policy issues such as the need for increased access to care and healthcare investments within historically disadvantaged communities. While individuals often have a desire to engage in the advocacy or policymaking process\, they operate without a clear understanding of how to do so. This presentation will outline different roles in advocacy campaigns\, as well as functions of and actors within the advocacy ecosystem. In doing so\, this presentation will give participants a basic understanding of how each mechanism impacts the policymaking process\, and how to operate within the broader policymaking ecosystem as rural health policy advocates. \nTrainer: Matthew Braun\, MS\, BA\nRegistration: click here.

SUMMARY:NJHRC's Monthly Person-Centered Overdose Education & Naloxone Training
DESCRIPTION:Evidence shows that among the most likely to witness an overdose are people who use drugs\, care providers\, neighbors\, and loved ones – none of which are mutually exclusive\, and all of which may include you. NJHRC will be hosting monthly virtual Overdose Education & Naloxone training to learn how to identify and respond to an opioid overdose with rescue breaths\, naloxone\, and radical love. Our program will also cover the nuances surrounding current drug supply trends\, with updated information as overdose responses evolve in correlation. By centering the safety and autonomy of both the individual receiving care and the responder\, we can produce better outcomes for the community at large. \nJoin us for our next training to learn how to respond to an overdose and keep your community safer. \nAttendees in New Jersey can email mailing@njharmreduction.org or call/text 1-877-4NARCAN if they’d like to receive a free naloxone kit and/or other safer use supplies by mail. Conversations on drug policy and drug supply may be centered around New Jersey\, but you are welcome in this training no matter your location. \nThis virtual training will be held on Zoom on the second Friday of every month. (April 11\, May 9\, June 12\, July 11\, Aug 8\, Sept 12\, Oct 11)\nRegister now to reserve your spot!

SUMMARY:NJ ACTS Special Populations Seminar with Julie R. Gaither\, "The Impact of the Opioid Crisis on Infants\, Children\, and Adolescents
DESCRIPTION:Join the NJ ACTS Special Populations Core 2025 Seminar Series –   “The Impact of the Opioid Crisis on Infants\, Children\, and Adolescents” with Julie R. Gaither\, PhD. \nThe presentation will provide an overview of how the pediatric community has been impacted by the opioid crisis. An overview of trends in pediatric morbidity and mortality related to opioids in general and fentanyl specifically will be provided. The talk will also present recent data related to the circumstances behind fatal pediatric opioid poisonings and the risk of maltreatment among infants\, young children\, and adolescents. \nDr. Gaither is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics (General Pediatrics) and Public Health (Chronic Disease Epidemiology). She obtained her doctorate in epidemiology from the Yale School of Public Health in 2015. After completing a post-doctoral fellowship in bioinformatics\, she joined the faculty of the Yale School of Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics. Her research focuses on the impact of the opioid crisis on vulnerable populations\, work she began more than a decade ago as part of her dissertation research\, for which she received a National Research Service Award from the NIH to study the association between opioid prescribing practices and all-cause mortality among U.S. veterans. In 2015\, she began working on a project that allowed her to bridge her interests in adult medicine with that of pediatrics\, which resulted in the first national publication to examine hospitalizations for opioid poisonings in children. She followed this work with the first national study to examine pediatric deaths from opioids. Prior to these publications\, most of what was known about opioid-related morbidity and mortality came from the adult overdose literature. Her research has been supported by awards from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)\, the National Center for Advancing Translational Science\, the Patterson Trust\, the Hood Foundation\, and most recently\, the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). \nRegister for the event: https://go.rutgers.edu/5almfux

SUMMARY:SSW Webinar - Social Media: The Good\, the Bad and the Ugly from a Social Work Perspective
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will examine the impact social media\, music\, and advertising have on today’s society. Overexposure to certain media outlets can influence how people develop their value system and how they make decisions on moral issues and peer relationships. We know this to be particularly true with individuals who have experienced trauma and significant losses. By examining music\, videos\, and advertisement campaigns\, we identify the negative impact of imagery and subliminal messages\, and discuss ways to help individuals identify why they make the choices they make online. We will explore how to increase media literacy by educating and empowering individuals to use critical thinking skills and to see the direct and unintended consequences associated with technology. The importance of legislative advocacy will also be discussed. \n\n\n\nInstructor: \nQur-an Webb\, MSW\n\n\nDate: \nThursday\, April 17\, 2025\n\n\nTime: \n6:00 pm – 9:00 pm ET\n\n\n\nRegistration: click here.

SUMMARY:NeC-ROTAC Webinar - Responsive Care: The Experiences of Women and Children along the Care Continuum in Rural Communities
DESCRIPTION:As the number of individuals who are challenged by substance use and mental health continue to be on the rise\, we are at a crossroads when it comes to the care of women and their children. While the number of programs who offer specific services to women and their children are increasing across the state\, there continues to be need for more gender-responsive programming in substance use and mental health programs to address the unique needs of women and their children. This challenge is even more significant in rural communities where there are significant barriers to service accessibility. This workshop will lean into specific challenges as they relate to women impacted by both substance use and mental health concerns and the impact on children in their care. \nTrainer: Dr. Delores Blackwell\, LCSW\nRegistration: click here.

SUMMARY:Addiction Policy Forum Webinar - Improving Mental Health Outcomes: 59 Essential Evidence-Based Practices for Communities\, Police\, Courts\, Jails\, and Community Corrections
DESCRIPTION:Join Drs. Jennifer Johnson and Faye S. Taxman for a discussion on results from their study exploring evidence-based mental health practices for individuals involved in the justice system or at risk of becoming involved in the justice system. These practices can be used in communities or police\, court\, jail\, and community corrections settings. Their work has shown that a lack of community mental health and substance use services in communities predicts higher per capita jail populations. Therefore\, strengthening community mental health services is important for preventing jail incarceration and re-incarceration. \n\nThis webinar will cover findings from the study\, which identified 59 evidence-based practices–ranging from trauma-informed care and diversion to mental health treatment to therapeutic or medication-based interventions—that could significantly improve support\, treatment\, recovery\, and overall health outcomes and help prevent incarceration and re-incarceration.\n\nFor more details and registration\, click here.
