SUMMARY:Cyberbotany and the Quest for Epistemic Justice in Psychedelic Research Webinar featuring Dr. Joanna Kempner
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Borghesi-Mellon Psychedelic Pasts\, Presents & Futures Workshop Group for a presentation with Dr. Joanna Kempner.\n\n\n\nThe reemergence of psychedelic research in universities comes with a robust historical narrative that blames politicians for the rise and fall of scientific interest in these substances. While it’s true that public policies made it more difficult to study psychedelics in institutionalized settings\, prohibition only pushed experimentation with psychedelics underground and out of sight. Nevertheless\, knowledge produced underground has been foundational in contemporary psychedelic science\, vis a vis a practice that I call “cyberbotany.”\n\nCyberbotany\, or the digital ethnobotanical study\, leverages the wealth of experiential data available within online communities to understand the use of psychedelic substances. This approach circumvents the legal and logistical barriers to traditional research by tapping into the vast\, yet often overlooked\, reservoir of knowledge generated in digital spaces.\n\n\n\nIt’s not always clear\, however\, that the use of cyberbotany translates into recognition of the value that diverse knowledge systems have brought into the field. I argue that cyberbotany underscores the importance of epistemic justice in the domain of psychedelic studies. SUMMARY:GSAPP Webinar - Treating Trauma when Addiction is Present
DESCRIPTION:Trauma is a phenomenon that impacts all of our lives. This course will cover: the origins of trauma\, the definition of trauma\, the natural adaption to regulate and the vulnerability to substance use\, history of treatment\, anatomy of the brain\, stress response\, ACE Study and its correlation to addiction\, discussion of the impact of in utero through age five\, different types of trauma\, ways to repair the brain\, ways to build resiliency\, and the future of trauma studies. This course will cover the impact of racial trauma and the ways incarceration has traumatized persons of color\, particularly men of color\, as black men have been disproportionately overrepresented as drug-using offenders. Review of treatment interventions will include top-down TF CBT\, talk therapy\, cognitive restructuring\, exposure versus bottom-up SMART\, Yoga therapy\, Brainspotting\, EMDR\, etc. \nLearning Objectives \n\nAs a result of this training participants will be able to identify a minimum of at least two examples of acute versus chronic trauma\nAs a result of this training participants will be able to describe at least one way the sympathetic nervous system functions differently than the parasympathetic nervous system.\nAs a result of this training participants will be able to recognize at least two different types of top-down approaches versus bottom-up approaches.\n\nInstructor Bio \nJoel Levine has been a multi licensed therapist and educator therapist for the last twenty five years\, completing his Masters in Social Work\, at Fordham University\, with a Specialization in Substance Abuse and a two year post graduate training program in Family Therapy from the Multicultural Family Institute of Highland Park\, New Jersey with Monica Mc Goldrick\, LCSW and Nydia Garcia Preto\, LCSW\, as well two years of post-graduate training with The Center for Family\, Community and Social Justice. He has also completed a one-year study with William Miller\, the founder of Motivational Interviewing entitled Project Elicit\, designed to provide clinicians with fidelity to the model\, is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of trainers (MINT) and has been recognized by MINT as an approved trainer. He has recently completed all three levels of the Gottman Training. \nHe is licensed as a: Marriage and Family Therapist\, Clinical Social Worker\, Professional Counselor\, and a Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. In addition\, he is a Clinical Fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy\, a member of the American Family Therapy Academy\, Academy of Certified Social Workers and is certified as an Approved Clinical Supervisor\, Certified Clinical Supervisor; NASW NJ approved Supervisor and AAMFT Approved Supervisor. He is recognized as a leader in the field of marriage and Family Therapy by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy\, recently serving as board president for the State of New Jersey. He is also certified as a Certified\, Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) Masters Addiction Counselor\, Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor\, Substance Abuse Professional\, and a Nationally Certified Counselor. \nHe has a passion for working with families and their communities. SUMMARY:Addiction Policy Forum Webinar: How to Build Opioid Data Dashboards for Community Decision-Making
DESCRIPTION:Register here! \nData dashboards are powerful tools that can support community engagement and decision-making by providing public health surveillance\, early detection of emerging health threats\, and efficient resource allocation. These dashboards serve as a transparent and customizable platform for communicating critical information in easy-to-understand\, interactive formats (e.g.\, charts\, graphs\, maps) to policymakers\, stakeholders\, community members\, and the public. Many states and jurisdictions across the country have utilized data dashboards to identify trends\, evaluate the effectiveness of existing policies\, and develop targeted interventions to quell the ongoing substance use disorder and overdose crisis. As part of the HEALing Communities Study (HCS)\, a multi-site research study that tested the impact of an integrated set of evidence-based practices to reduce fatal opioid-related overdose\, researchers from four participating research sites (New York\, Massachusetts\, Kentucky\, and Ohio) developed unique dashboards to support data-driven decision-making. \nJoin us for a webinar to learn how data dashboards can facilitate evidence-based decision-making by providing insights into effective approaches\, gaps in substance use disorder services\, and opportunities to address challenges within communities. Presenters will provide a step-by-step walkthrough of the undertakings to develop the HCS dashboards\, including the process of accessing\, displaying\, and explaining data; co-designing dashboards with state and local partners; implementing and using dashboards in the community; and best practices for using and sustaining them. They will also share publicly available tools that communities can use to develop their own dashboards\, as well as a set of standardized measures used by HCS for data collection.
