SUMMARY:RU Neuroconnections Seminar with Francesca LoFaro: Neural Signatures of Subjective Value in People with Opioid Use Disorder
DESCRIPTION:Francesca is a third year Neuroscience PhD student in Dr. Anna Konova’s Addiction and Decision Making Neuroscience Lab. She will be discussing her work on risk-taking and opioid use disorder. Using fMRI\, she has examined the role risk tolerances play on the neural representation of subjective value. First looking at group differences in people with OUD in comparison to healthy controls\, and then looking at the stability of these representations across OUD treatment using longitudinal MRI. SUMMARY:NeC-ROTAC Webinar - Stress on the Farm: Understanding and Addressing the Stress and Suicide Risk in Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Farmers experience very high levels of stress\, triggered by stressors such as uncertain weather\, uncertain finances\, unpredictable input costs and commodity prices\, changing policies and tariffs\, exhaustion\, social isolation\, high risk of injury\, and more recently\, the COVID-19 pandemic. These high levels of stress can increase the risks of health problems\, substance misuse\, and suicide. Providing support to farmers for stress management and wellbeing can be challenging. Values such as stoicism and stigma around help-seeking make it difficult for farmers to admit when they are struggling with stress. This webinar will provide information on suicide and substance misuse rates in farmers\, discuss stress and its impact\, review simple strategies for stress management\, and provide an overview of an Extension-based intervention to address farmer stress.  \n Trainer: Anna Scheyett\, PhD\, MSW\, LCSW\, is professor and former dean at the University of Georgia School of Social Work with a joint appointment in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. SUMMARY:ASAM Webinar: Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder
DESCRIPTION:According to the 2021 National Survey of Drug Use and Health\, 29.5 million people ages 12 and older had Alcohol Use Disorder in the past year. Alcohol Use Disorder is a chronic and complex disease that affects thousands of patients every year. There are evidence-based approaches to treatment\, including non-pharmacological interventions and medications. Understanding these options and misconceptions about treatment alternatives can help improve outcomes for patients. \nThis 3-hour introductory course provides an overview of the diagnosis and management of Alcohol Use Disorder\, with a focus on treatment in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. This case-based\, interactive course highlights the triage and management of patients with alcohol withdrawal syndromes\, and the successful transition to evidence-based pharmacotherapy. Adjunct behavioral therapies will also be discussed. \nThe target audience for this introductory course is clinical healthcare professionals who prescribe medications in the outpatient or inpatient settings. \nLearning Objectives\n\nDemonstrate knowledge of nomenclature\, diagnostic criteria\, and the epidemiology of Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)\nIdentify which people are appropriate for inpatient management vs. outpatient management of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (AWS).\nDiscuss evidence-based methods of treatment for alcohol use disorder\, including pharmacotherapy and behavioral treatments.\n\nFor more information and registration\, click here.

DESCRIPTION:This course examines how the field of addiction treatment and recovery has evolved since the development of 12-step recovery spaces in the 1950’s\, from societal conceptualizations about addiction to how treatment and evidence-based practices have shaped what we now call clinical addiction treatment. Particular attention will be paid to how paradigms\, stigma\, and oppressive systems have influenced and shaped addiction and treatment trends. Participants will critically examine the successes and pitfalls of addiction treatment as it stands today\, including specific models and systems of recovery and what the field calls “evidence-based practices”. SUMMARY:SSW Webinar: The Opioid Crisis in NJ: Current Trends and Evidence-Based Treatment Options
DESCRIPTION:This interactive webinar will discuss the latest developments and trends regarding natural opiates\, semi-synthetic opioids\, and synthetic opioids. Participants will be able to identify national and local NJ trends with regards to prescribing practices and new legislation\, opioid overdoses and trends with opioid use. Participants will be able to distinguish the difference between which drugs are considered naturally occurring opiates\, which are considered semi-synthetic opioids and which are considered synthetic opioids. Participants will be introduced into the assessment of and treatment of Opioid Use Disorders via the DSM 5 criteria\, the latest nationally recognized medicated assisted treatment and the non-medication assisted treatment approaches when working with clients. Participants will be able to identify three different medicated assisted treatments (MAT)\, and discussion of medicinal marijuana being added as an MAT option. Webinar participants will be introduced to a harm reduction treatment paradigm and will be able to identify at least 3 different harm reduction principles when working with clients. Participants will be able to identify national and local NJ trends with regards to prescribing practices and new legislation\, opioid overdoses and trends with opioid use. DESCRIPTION:Sheila Shanmugan\, MD\, PhD \nUNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA – SCHOOL OF MEDICINE \n“Towards Personalized Reproductive Psychiatry” \nReproductive psychiatry is currently a field of trial and error. We don’t know which patient’s disorders will improve\, worsen\, or persist; we also don’t know which treatment will work best for a patient until she tries it. Optimizing early intervention is particularly critical in reproductive psychiatry\, not only because puberty\, pregnancy\, and menopause are times of heightened vulnerability to psychopathology\, but also because the consequences of delaying intervention during these reproductive time points are often long-lasting. In this talk\, I will describe how I envision combining neuroimaging and machine learning to answer these clinical questions in women’s mental health. First\, I will present my recent work on sex differences in personalized functional networks. Next\, I will present my graduate work on indicators of and treatments for perimenopausal executive dysfunction. DESCRIPTION:Peers provide a critical level of support for individuals throughout all intercepts of the criminal justice system\, but often\, the supportive nature of their role causes them to prioritize the needs of others over themselves. When a peer neglects their own needs to support the needs of others\, they become more likely to experience negative consequences such as burnout and compassion fatigue. This is especially true for peers working with individuals who are involved with the criminal justice system. Whether a peer is serving as a mentor\, assisting individuals with navigating the criminal justice system\, advocating for those in recovery\, or providing linkages to supports and services\, it is crucial that peers not lose sight of their own wellness and job satisfaction. This webinar will feature an introduction to the 8 Dimensions of Wellness as a framework for identifying personal goals and opportunities to increase self-care practices.
