DESCRIPTION:NJ ACTS Special Populations Core 2023 Seminar Series – Improving Pain Strategies in the Emergency Department with Cynthia Santos\, MD. \nDr. Cynthia Santos is Associate Professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and is triple board certified in Emergency Medicine\, Medical Toxicology\, and Addiction Medicine. She is the Medical Toxicology elective course director and residency scholarly tract leader and is on the International Committee for the American College of Medical Toxicology\, where she is a course instructor for the Global Educational Toxicology Toolkit and acts as the committee’s research grant leader. \nDr. Santos will discuss a recently awarded grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration that aims to develop and implement person-centered treatment approaches for painful conditions frequently treated at the emergency department of University Hospital by adopting innovative pharmaceutical approaches and incorporating alternative nonpharmacological interventions. DESCRIPTION:The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Center for the Clinical Trials Network (CCTN) is hosting a webinar titled Addictions Research Meets Lived Experience: Lessons Learned\, Opportunities and Challenges. \nPeer support services have expanded to a wide variety of health service settings\, and evaluating the impact of peer services is an important addition to the research agenda. In this webinar\, the presenters and panel members will share lessons learned in conducting trials with persons with lived experience -peers-participating as an integral component of the intervention. The goal of the webinar is to assist investigators in designing future studies with peers as interventionists. The agenda includes an overview of the development of peer services in addiction treatment\, a brief description of three research projects\, and a panel discussion of peer supervision\, self-care\, scope of practice\, fidelity\, harm reduction approaches\, and role induction for peers in research. SUMMARY:Leveraging the Capacities of Peers in Rural Health Services Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Peers\, people with lived experience of addiction recovery\, are well positioned to address unmet service needs in rural areas. Because of their lived experience and informal approach\, peers can quickly build rapport with people in or seeking recovery and connect them with local resources. However\, peer services can be challenged by stigma toward drug use\, inconsistencies with credentialing and supervision\, and the emotional burden of the work. These challenges may be exacerbated in rural communities characterized by fewer resources and conservative beliefs about addiction recovery. \nThis webinar will present an overview of the value of peer services in rural communities. Attendees will review various peer support models and identify strategies for successfully incorporating peers in existing health and social service settings. \nPresenter: Emily Pasman\, PhD\, LMSW is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Michigan Center for the Study of Drugs\, Alcohol\, Smoking and Health. Her social work practice has centered around the development\, implementation\, and evaluation of peer-delivered recovery support services. Her current research aims to expand harm reduction interventions and improve peer-delivered services\, primarily by reducing stigma toward non-abstinent recovery.

SUMMARY:SAS Webinar - The Opioid Crisis in NJ: Current Trends and Evidence-Based Treatment Options
DESCRIPTION:This interactive webinar will discuss the latest developments and trends regarding natural opiates\, semi-synthetic opioids\, and synthetic opioids. Participants will be able to identify national and local NJ trends with regards to prescribing practices and new legislation\, opioid overdoses and trends with opioid use. Participants will be able to distinguish the difference between which drugs are considered naturally occurring opiates\, which are considered semi-synthetic opioids and which are considered synthetic opioids. Participants will be introduced into the assessment of and treatment of Opioid Use Disorders via the DSM 5 criteria\, the latest nationally recognized medicated assisted treatment and the non-medication assisted treatment approaches when working with clients. Participants will be able to identify three different medicated assisted treatments (MAT)\, and discussion of medicinal marijuana being added as an MAT option. Webinar participants will be introduced to a harm reduction treatment paradigm and will be able to identify at least 3 different harm reduction principles when working with clients. Finally\, participants will engage in an interactive case that will develop throughout the webinar and have different objectives (e.g.\, assessing a proper level of care\, and then incorporating a harm reduction treatment orientation with the client in regards to their MAT decision process). DESCRIPTION:Manesh Gopaldas\, MD\, is an Addiction Psychiatrist and NIDA- funded T32 Research Fellow at Columbia University. He is engaged in health services research\, with a primary focus on identifying\, developing\, and implementing best practices to engage and retain individuals with substance use disorders in their care. \nThrough his T32 fellowship\, he has pursued several research projects\, including investigating the relationship between medication adherence and health care service utilization among treatment-seeking individuals with opioid use disorder. Dr. Gopaldas has also delved into examining the factors that influence continuous engagement in care for those with opioid use disorder. DESCRIPTION:Francesca is a third year Neuroscience PhD student in Dr. Anna Konova’s Addiction and Decision Making Neuroscience Lab. She will be discussing her work on risk-taking and opioid use disorder. Using fMRI\, she has examined the role risk tolerances play on the neural representation of subjective value. First looking at group differences in people with OUD in comparison to healthy controls\, and then looking at the stability of these representations across OUD treatment using longitudinal MRI. SUMMARY:NeC-ROTAC Webinar - Stress on the Farm: Understanding and Addressing the Stress and Suicide Risk in Farmers
DESCRIPTION:Farmers experience very high levels of stress\, triggered by stressors such as uncertain weather\, uncertain finances\, unpredictable input costs and commodity prices\, changing policies and tariffs\, exhaustion\, social isolation\, high risk of injury\, and more recently\, the COVID-19 pandemic. These high levels of stress can increase the risks of health problems\, substance misuse\, and suicide. Providing support to farmers for stress management and wellbeing can be challenging. Values such as stoicism and stigma around help-seeking make it difficult for farmers to admit when they are struggling with stress. This webinar will provide information on suicide and substance misuse rates in farmers\, discuss stress and its impact\, review simple strategies for stress management\, and provide an overview of an Extension-based intervention to address farmer stress.  \n Trainer: Anna Scheyett\, PhD\, MSW\, LCSW\, is professor and former dean at the University of Georgia School of Social Work with a joint appointment in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. DESCRIPTION:According to the 2021 National Survey of Drug Use and Health\, 29.5 million people ages 12 and older had Alcohol Use Disorder in the past year. Alcohol Use Disorder is a chronic and complex disease that affects thousands of patients every year. There are evidence-based approaches to treatment\, including non-pharmacological interventions and medications. Understanding these options and misconceptions about treatment alternatives can help improve outcomes for patients. \nThis 3-hour introductory course provides an overview of the diagnosis and management of Alcohol Use Disorder\, with a focus on treatment in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. This case-based\, interactive course highlights the triage and management of patients with alcohol withdrawal syndromes\, and the successful transition to evidence-based pharmacotherapy.
