SUMMARY:NeC-ROTAC Webinar - The Caring Connection: Trauma-Informed Care and Recovery Planning (in Rural Settings)
DESCRIPTION:Many providers and agencies in rural communities are familiar with the core components of both Trauma-Informed Care and Recovery Planning but may not be familiar with the preparation necessary to provide trauma-informed recovery planning in collaboration with their clients. While working with clients to both plan for their recovery and address challenges to their recovery\, trauma in its many forms has a role to play as a part of this planning. This workshop will lean into providers and caregivers identifying and recognizing the role and impact of trauma on recovery planning and how to work with clients to identify when trauma activation may impact their recovery plan This workshop will review the core components of trauma-informed care and lean into how to work with clients to identify how and when trauma impacts during their recovery journey. \nPresenter: Dr. Delores Blackwell\, LCSW\, is a multijurisdictional licensed clinical social worker. She has held numerous administrative and clinical positions within both the addictions and mental health disciplines. She is an adjunct professor at both Touro College and Hunter College Silberman Schools of Social Work. In conjunction with her numerous roles\, she also conducts and develops trainings for mental health and addictions professionals in both direct practice and leadership positions. She is currently a Research Project Manager at the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University Medical Center\, where she works with the Opioid Response Network and Rural Opioid Technical Assistance Center within the Northeast and Caribbean (HHS Region 2). \nFor more information\, click here.

Dr. Gold will explore emerging challenges in treating substance use disorders\, sharing insights from his recent publications. DESCRIPTION:As we lean more and more into equity in a variety of spaces and places\, health equity has become a significant part of this ongoing conversation. Health and the concepts of equity are interconnected in a variety of ways when working with our clients\, not just around health outcomes\, but improving their overall quality of life. DESCRIPTION:RSVP – A Book Event and Panel on Harm Reduction in Action. \nYou are invited to join a presentation and discussion regarding harm reduction programs for people with addictions\, and it will feature my long-time colleague Pat Roos\, who will be discussing her book\, Surviving Alex: A Mother’s Story of Love\, Loss\, and Addiction\, recently published by Rutgers University Press.  The event is being co-sponsored with the office of the Dean of the Social and Behavioral Sciences and the School of Arts and Sciences.  We hope to attract a large crowd from a variety of disciplines\, as well as people with both professional and personal interest in this most serious topic.  Pat is a dear friend\, and she was a cherished colleague through my first two decades at Rutgers.

SUMMARY:NASEM Report Release Webinar - Cannabis Policy Impacts Public Health and Health Equity
DESCRIPTION:Many states have been moving toward the legalization of cannabis and cannabis products\, but the public health implications of these policy changes have not been fully evaluated. An expert committee of the National Academies wrote a report to describe cannabis and cannabinoid availability in the U.S.\, assess regulatory frameworks for the cannabis industry using a health equity lens\, and describe strengths and weaknesses of medical and non-medical surveillance systems. DESCRIPTION:The organizing committee of the EBPS 2024 Workshop “Novel pharmacotherapies for substance use and related mental health disorders: From basic science to societal impact” cordially invite you to join us for the biennial workshop of the European Behavioural Pharmacology Society which takes place September 25 to 27\, 2024 at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity in Banff\, Alberta\, Canada. \nThis workshop will highlight cutting edge pharmacology-based interventions for substance use and related mental health disorders\, including psychedelics\, cannabinoids\, neuropeptides\, and more. Diverse panels and speakers have confirmed their participation\, including Keynotes from Drs. David Nutt\, Alex Kwan\, Margaret Haney\, and Lorenzo Leggio. \nThe workshop will also include panels consisting of experts in patient advocacy\, clinical ethics\, and regulatory frameworks\, who will provide insights into the potential (and realized) challenges to implementing these novel interventions. \nIf anyone from your team may be interested\, we have trainee travel awards due July 5th and early bird registration is through July 12th. DESCRIPTION:This presentation will describe the role of peer support specialists in the emergency department (ED) and how Dr. Angela Moreland and team integrated this at the statewide level. Dr. Moreland will discuss interviews conducted with peers and their feedback on their role in the ED and perceptions of working with patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). \nAngela Moreland\, Ph.D.\, is a Professor at the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center (NCVC) at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)\, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Moreland has expertise in consequences\, stressors\, and available resources and treatments related to substance use\, with specific expertise in opioid use disorder and assessing for OUD and treatment options in the Emergency Department. DESCRIPTION:As we think about the impact of substance use and mental health within rural communities\, a key component is accessing the resources available. In this webinar\, we will discuss potential interventions that can be implemented or strengthened within rural communities. This workshop will focus on how providers and community members can develop collaborative networks to support members of their community who may be facing substance use and mental health challenges in their daily lives. We will also discuss potential prevention methods to be introduced within community spaces to reduce the impact of substance use on individuals and families\, and increase engagement in mental health care. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenter: Dr. Delores Blackwell\, LCSW\, is a multijurisdictional licensed clinical social worker. She has held numerous administrative and clinical positions within both the addictions and mental health disciplines. She is an adjunct professor at both Touro College and Hunter College Silberman Schools of Social Work. In conjunction with her numerous roles\, she also conducts and develops trainings for mental health and addictions professionals in both direct practice and leadership positions. Dr. Dick is an internationally recognized and award-winning expert on genetic and environmental influences on substance use and mental health in youth. She has more than 425 peer-reviewed publications in the areas of child development\, addiction\, mental health\, genetics\, and human behavior\, and has won numerous national and international awards for her work. She has been named one of the most highly cited scientists in the world. \nDr. Donald Reeves\, MD\nDr. Donald Reeves is Director of Psychiatry for Rutgers University Correctional Health Care. He is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School\, and he also serves as director of the Rutgers Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship. Dr. Reeves’ research interest is correctional psychiatry\, and he has published extensively in this field.

Berry\, Professor and Chair of the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry and the Director of Addictions at the West Virginia University School of Medicine. \n\n\nThe biopsychosocial model addresses the biological\, psychological\, and social factors that contribute to many chronic illnesses\, including addiction. Biopsychosocial recognizes that there are multiple pathways to addiction\, such as genetic predisposition\, psychiatric and psychological factors like trauma or unhealthy coping skills\, and social factors like having substance-using peers. Join us to hear from Dr. Berry about these three critical domains in recovery and the need to build individualized\, tailored treatment plans. \n\n\nSpeaker: James H. Berry\, DO is Professor and Chair of the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry at West Virginia University School of Medicine and the Director of Addictions. He is board-certified in both General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry.
