SUMMARY:Learning Series Webinar - The National Opioid Crisis: Current Trends & Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Featured Speaker: Cheryl Ortiz\, DEA-NJ SAC\nCheryl Ortiz is the Special Agent in Charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New Jersey Field Division covering the state of New Jersey. SAC Ortiz is a 21-year veteran of the DEA having served diverse assignments to include multi-agency international investigations and local impact initiatives in domestic offices. She previously served in the United States Marine Corps\, and as a deputy sheriff with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. SAC Ortiz began her career with the DEA in the Miami Field Division where she served as a special agent and then as a supervisory special agent overseeing a HIDTA Task Force. After serving as a supervisory special agent in Miami\, she continued her career as a supervisory special agent of a HIDTA group out of the Washington Division. SAC Ortiz was also assigned to DEA Headquarters as a staff coordinator at the Special Operations Division\, where she supported and oversaw DEA operations throughout the Mexico\, Central America and Canada section\, and the Latin America and Caribbean section. SUMMARY:Cannabis and Adolescents: An Overview of the Science and Concerns from Leading Experts
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging webinar on January 15\, 2025\, on the complex relationship between cannabis use and adolescent development with  Dr. Mark Gold\, M.D.\, and Dr. Sarah Vinson\, M.D.  The presentations will explore the effects of cannabis on adolescent brain development\, its potential long-term consequences\, and emerging trends in use among younger populations. \n\n\n\nDr. Mark Gold\, M.D.\, is a trailblazing figure in addiction and psychiatry\, known for his transformative contributions across multiple medical fields. With over 1\,000 peer-reviewed publications and 30\,000 academic citations\, his work has left an indelible mark on the medical community. Dr. Gold is a founding member and director of the McKnight Brain Institute and is celebrated for modernizing addiction medicine training. His pioneering research on opioid dependence led to groundbreaking theories on addiction and withdrawal\, and he discovered the effectiveness of alpha-2 adrenergic agonists\, such as clonidine and lofexidine\, in easing withdrawal symptoms. Collaborating with colleagues\, he revolutionized addiction psychiatry by introducing evidence-based care and medication-assisted treatments. His insights have advanced opioid use disorder treatments and expanded our understanding of cocaine’s impact on dopamine and addiction. As a visiting professor\, editor\, and researcher\, Dr. Gold continues to influence the field of translational neuroscience. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Sarah Y. Vinson\, M.D.\, is a leading expert in adult\, child & adolescent\, and forensic psychiatry. She founded the Lorio Psych Group and Lorio Forensics\, providing mental health care and forensic consultation. Dr. Vinson serves as the Professor and Chair of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at Morehouse School of Medicine and is an Adjunct Faculty member at Emory University. A graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine with specialized training at Harvard and Emory\, she is a sought-after speaker and advocate. Her work focuses on trauma\, equity in mental health care\, and the intersection of psychiatry and the justice system. Dr. Vinson has received numerous honors\, including the APA Jeanne Spurlock Minority Fellowship Alumna Achievement Award.

SUMMARY:Responsive Care: The Experiences of Women and Children along the Care Continuum in Rural Communities
DESCRIPTION:As the number of individuals who are challenged by substance use and mental health continue to be on the rise\, we are at a crossroads when it comes to the care of women and their children. While the number of programs who offer specific services to women and their children are increasing across the state\, there continues to be need for more gender-responsive programming in substance use and mental health programs to address the unique needs of women and their children. This challenge is even more significant in rural communities where there are significant barriers to service accessibility. This workshop will lean into specific challenges as they relate to women impacted by both substance use and mental health concerns and the impact on children in their care. \nPresenter: Dr. Delores Blackwell\, LCSW\, is a multijurisdictional licensed clinical social worker. She has held numerous administrative and clinical positions within both the addictions and mental health disciplines. She is an adjunct professor at both Touro College and Hunter College Silberman Schools of Social Work. In conjunction with her numerous roles\, she also conducts and develops trainings for mental health and addictions professionals in both direct practice and leadership positions. She is currently a Research Project Manager at the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University Medical Center\, where she works with the Opioid Response Network and Rural Opioid Technical Assistance Center within the Northeast and Caribbean (HHS Region 2).
